About the Colors of Unbound
Color is more than just an aesthetic choice, it's a language. It carries emotions, energy, and intention. In my latest collection of paintings, the vibrant hues of purples, blues, pinks, and neon greens aren’t just for visual impact; they are a deliberate expression of empowerment, rebellion, and self-acceptance.
Purple has long been associated with royalty, spirituality, and transformation. But for me, purple also means sex. It reminds me of the lusciousness of fingers running across my skin, of surrendering to pleasure and embracing the things I want to ask for. It is the color of being fully embodied, of honoring what my body wants and needs without shame.
And that is special.
In these paintings, purple holds the weight of desire and liberation. It serves as a reminder of the inherent strength and dignity in every body. It embraces the curves, folds, and presence of each figure, demanding to be seen and celebrated. Purples DEMAND to be seen, so these figures are not fading into the shadows; they are commanding the space.
The bold blues in my work represent confidence and self-assurance. Blue has a calming effect, but here, it also carries a weight, like the ocean, it is deep, vast, and unapologetic. These bodies, bathed in blue, stand firm against outdated beauty standards. The phrase “Who told you to be small?” written across one of the paintings becomes even more powerful against the cool-toned backdrop. Blue isn’t just about tranquility; in this context, it’s a declaration of unwavering presence.
Pink, especially when combined with neon tones, is often associated with femininity, but in these works, it’s used as a weapon of defiance. The bold lettering on one piece "FUCK YOUR RULES" uses bright pink to reject societal expectations. It’s loud, unignorable, and full of attitude.
Neon green and neon yellow, colors that disrupt and electrify, add another layer of intensity. Neon green pushes against the norm, much like the bodies in these paintings push against conventional standards of beauty. But neon yellow? That’s the color of raw energy, of visibility that can’t be ignored. It’s the color of a highlighter marking what’s important, what demands attention. In this context, it signifies bodies that refuse to shrink, pleasure that refuses to be quiet, and an existence that refuses to be hidden. Neon yellow is a call to step fully into our own light.
Black is often seen as a void, but here, it serves as a foundation. It allows the bold colors to pop, just as embracing our bodies against a society that tries to erase or diminish them makes us stand out even more. The black brick backgrounds give a sense of an urban, gritty reality a reminder that these bodies exist in the real world, not just in the confines of idealized beauty.
The color palette of these paintings isn't random. It’s intentional, designed to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and encourage conversation. These colors tell a story of boldness, resilience, and the freedom to exist fully in our own skin. When you look at these paintings, I hope you don’t just see color. My deepest desire is that you feel it.
XOXO,
Tiffany
